Ingredients

Dry ingredients

  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup processed or all purpose flour or maida
  • ½ cup Greek yogurt or plant-based yogurt or thick yogurt
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • ½ tsp. sugar
  • ½ tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. minced garlic optional
  • 2 tbsp. vegetable oil
  • Butter for applying on naan or olive oil for dairy free
  • Warm water to knead the dough

For garnish

  • Chopped cilantro or nigella seeds, minced garlic, fresh herbs like parsley

Instructions

  • Mix together whole wheat flour, processed flour, salt, sugar and baking powder in a shallow thali or plate.
  • Add ½ cup thick yogurt and knead to a grainy mix. Now add 1.5 tbsp. oil and knead further.
  • Now using warm water little by little make a soft dough. You may use about ½ cup of warm water. Make sure it is not hot. Make a ball of dough. Brush with oil and cover with a damp cloth. Keep aside for 30 minutes.
  • After 30 minutes, gently knead the dough again for 30 seconds and form small balls. You will get about 10 naans with this recipe.
  • Now with the help of a rolling pin, roll out each naan in a slightly oval shape using dry flour. You can roll it out to ⅛ inch thickness.
  • Once rolled out, sprinkle some nigella seeds or minced garlic if using and press lightly with rolling pin.

For Skillet Cooking

  • Now heat an iron skillet or tawa till medium hot. Apply water to one side of the rolled naan. Lift it up gently and put in on the skillet with water side on the tawa.
  • It will instantly start puffing up. After about 1 minute you can turn the skillet upside down and cook the other side directly on the flame till it gets brown spots.
  • You can also roll out the naan a bit thin. In this case cook one side on the tawa or pan. Then turn the other side and cook cook the other side on direct flame like you do for roti.
  • Your naan is ready to serve. It is very soft. Immediately brush with melted butter or olive oil (vegan).

For Air fryer Cooking

  • Preheat air fryer at 200 C or 390 F for 4 minutes.
  • Lightly brush or spray the air fryer basket with oil or use parchment paper. Lay the rolled out naan after brushing the top lightly with melted butter or olive oil.
  • Air fry at 390 F for about 2-3 minutes till it is puffed and golden brown. The time can vary depending upon the thickness of your naan and your air fryer model.
  • Take it out and brush immediately with melted butter or olive oil and serve hot.
  • You can also sprinkle some finely chopped cilantro and serve with the curry of your choice.
  • Easy peasy. Your wholewheat naan is ready. It tastes just like what you get in Indian restaurants.

Notes

You can use only processed flour too in the recipe but using whole wheat flour gives it more flavour.
You can use any garnish of your choice. If using garlic, you can add finely minced garlic after rolling out the naan.
While kneading the dough use warm water to make a soft dough. It rises in size on resting.
Iron skillets work the best. In case you are using non-stick tawa, use the second method of rolling out thinner naan and then cooking the second side like rotis on flame.
Air frying is easy and supervision free method of making naans at home.
